Its football season right now the United States and for us this is an exciting time with lots of last minute drama. My favorite games to watch are the ones that are tied in the final quarter. There’s a special phenomenon during the last two minutes called the two minute drill. During these two minutes teams will either win or lose the game. They will operate without a huddle between plays, they will take big chances on both offense and defense, and they will try to out perform the other team with hustle, energy, emotion, and execution.
This is an amazing thing to watch because it’s high pressure and whether a team wins or loses depends on the team’s (made up of many individuals) composure, concentration, preparation, and ability to deal with setbacks (penalties, missed plays, etc.). These things are the product of the habits and practice these players and teams have performed in the past 6 months.
At Tignum we see this same thing everyday with the clients we work with in business. Unfortunately though, they haven’t prepared themselves for this critical two minutes. They don’t have the mindset, the energy, or the resilience to win the game because they left their two minute drill to chance.
We just finished a great open enrollment Tignum Premier program in Amsterdam and as I reflect on the group and their discussions I am once again deeply inspired that this group will be ready for their two minute drill. They are armed with a personal innovation map to create their best self over the next 6 months. Most important, they understand that what they do today to improve their performance, will determine how they perform in the crunch time when it matters the most 6 months from now. What did you do today to improve your performance?
